When it comes to choosing a vehicle to transport a wheelchair passenger it’s important to find a vehicle that works for your specific needs. Most adapted vehicles have the wheelchair passenger in the rear, either alongside or just behind the rear passengers, while some vehicles have the wheelchair passenger in the front, next to the driver – this is perfect for couples or families where one of the parents is in the wheelchair.
Whatever you require, there are a great range of disabled cars to choose from from many recognisable car manufacturers and adapted by a number of different wheelchair conversion companies.

Fiat Doblo
The Fiat Doblo is one of the most popular vehicles chosen as a wheelchair car. Doblos offer a number of configurations and come in both wheelchair up-front or wheelchair in the rear options. Typically they can carry three or four passengers in addition to the wheelchair. -
Peugeot Expert
The Peugeot Expert is a go-to vehicle for those looking for a larger vehicle. Offering a large space in the rear for the wheelchair passenger, wheelchair adapted Experts can usually seat four to six passengers in addition to the wheelchair. Wheelchair users board via a rear ramp and are secured in the rear. -
VW Caddy
A Popular choice due to it’s contemporary design and robust disabled conversions – the VW Caddy comes in two variations, the standard and the Maxi. The Maxi offers a longer wheelbase version and allows for extra room and has the space for an additional seat(s) in the rear. The wheelchair is usually located in the rear via a manual ramp, but can also be found with wheelchair driver or wheelchair transfer seat. -
Renault Kangoo
A well regarded and reliable wheelchair vehicle the Renault Kangoo is ideal as a disabled car for couples and smaller families. With the wheelchair in the back the Kangoo normally offers two or three seats. The slightly smaller size makes this vehicle very similar to a standard car in terms of drive and is popular among first time WAV buyers. -
Citroen Berlingo
Like the Renault Kangoo, the Citroen Berlingo offers a great choice as a first WAV. Usually adapted to carry the wheelchair in the rear with three seats. -
Peugeot Partner
A similar class of vehicle as the Kangoo and Berlingo, the Peugeot Partner is a wheelchair accessible vehicle with rear boarding, offering between two and four seats. -
Ford Tourneo
Available in two different sizes, the Ford Tourneo wheelchair vehicles are a stylish and slightly larger disabled vehicle. Offering three to five seats, the newer Ford Tourneos have a high level of equipment and often benefit from features such as powered winches. -
Fiat Multipla
Fiat Multipla wheelchair vehicles offer an up-front wheelchair solution with entry from a rear drop down ramp. Usually offering three or four seats the Multipla’s are a great family vehicle for those looking for a flexible up-front solution. No longer in production, the unique Multipla is getting harder to come by and when used ones do come onto the market there is usually a demand. -
Kia Soul
The Kia soul is a smaller quirky vehicle and offers the perfect vehicles for couples or smaller families who require a ‘city car’, or who just like the design. Wheelchair passengers are secured in the rear with a manual rear entrance.
There are many other models of wheelchair vehicle available including the Fiat Qubo, Kia Sedona and the Mercedes Vito for those looking for a slightly more ‘high-end’ vehicle.
