Which cars are available as a modified wheelchair accessible vehicle?
Unlike regular cars where there are as many different makes as there are models – wheelchair accessible vehicles are far more limited in the make and models available.
Wheelchair accessible vehicles are based on existing makes and models of standard vehicles, however not every car is suitable for carrying a wheelchair or mobility scooter so only certain models are chosen to be converted.
The wheelchair conversion process can mean, that depending on the vehicle and conversion type (wheelchair in front, rear wheelchair), only certain vehicles that have at least one of the following are able to be adapted.
- Higher roof
- Lower floor
- Long wheelbase
The increased internal space a longer wheelbase vehicle give you is essential in order for a wheelchair to be able to fit inside with other seated passengers, and a lowered floor and /or a higher roof will allow seated wheelchair users to be able to sit comfortably in the vehicle. While many vehicles are simply too small to be converted, there are other vehicles which are perfect suited to carrying wheelchairs.

Many vehicles are perfectly suitable for carrying wheelchairs without too much ‘structural change’ vehicles like the Peugeot Expert, Vauxhall Vivaro and Renault Kangoo are perfect for wheelchairs because of their existing higher roof, and the Vivaro and Expert both have larger internal space.
Are all wheelchair adapted vehicles large?
While larger vehicles are perfect for adapting, many smaller vehicles can be adapted too. The Renault Kangoo mentioned above is a smaller WAV but it’s higher roof rear compartment is perfect for wheelchair passengers. In fact many of the vehicles available for wheelchairs started life as a van (or have a van variant available), vehicles like the Fiat Doblo, Peugeot Partner and Ford Tourneo all either started life as a van or have a van option available.
