Kia PV5: A Game Changer for Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles

Kia has unveiled the PV5, an innovative electric vehicle (EV) designed to transform mobility for wheelchair users. As part of Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, the PV5 combines advanced EV technology with a highly adaptable design, making it a significant breakthrough for the UK’s wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV) market.

A New Era for Wheelchair Accessibility

One of the most exciting versions of the Kia PV5 is the Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) model. This variant has been carefully designed to provide enhanced accessibility, ease of use, and comfort for wheelchair users, caregivers, and families.

Key Accessibility Features:

  • Side Entry Design: Unlike many traditional WAVs that use rear entry, the PV5 offers a side-entry design. This makes getting in and out easier, especially in urban areas where space is tight.
  • Integrated Ramp: A built-in ramp supports up to 300kg, making wheelchair access smooth and secure.
  • Secure Wheelchair Fastening System: A user-friendly belt system ensures that the wheelchair is safely secured during travel.
  • Optimised Seating Layout: The design allows wheelchair users to enjoy forward visibility while also keeping other passengers comfortable.
  • Flexible Seating Options: A tip-up third-row seat provides extra space when needed and additional passenger seating when required.

Smart and Spacious Design

The PV5 is built on Kia’s E-GMP.S platform, a next-generation electric vehicle architecture. Thanks to its flat-floor design, the interior is spacious and highly adaptable, making it perfect for wheelchair users.

Kia’s Flexible Body System also allows for easier modifications, ensuring that accessibility features are integrated from the factory rather than relying solely on aftermarket conversions. This means WAV users get a high-quality, purpose-built vehicle straight from the manufacturer.

Performance and Charging Made Easy

The PV5 is not just accessible; it’s also efficient and practical for everyday use. Key performance features include:

  • Battery Choices: Available with a 51.5kWh or 71.2kWh battery (with an additional 43.3kWh option for cargo models).
  • Driving Range: Travel up to 249 miles (400km) on a full charge, making it suitable for both short and long journeys.
  • Fast Charging: Recharge from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes, minimising wait times.
  • Smooth Performance: A front electric motor delivers 120kW power and 250Nm torque for a comfortable, reliable ride.

Designed for Comfort and Practicality

Beyond accessibility, the PV5 offers a comfortable and practical driving experience for all passengers.

Key interior features include:

  • Low Step-In Height: At just 419mm, making entry and exit easier.
  • Spacious Cabin: Plenty of headroom and legroom to enhance comfort.
  • Smart Storage Solutions: Kia’s AddGear modular system allows for customisable storage compartments.
  • Advanced Technology: Features like an Android-based infotainment system, 12.9-inch navigation screen, and over-the-air (OTA) updates keep the PV5 modern and user-friendly.

A Sustainable Choice

Kia has stated they are committed to sustainability, and the PV5 reflects this with its eco-friendly materials. The vehicle includes thermoplastic olefin (TPO) flooring that is easy to clean and highly durable, as well as bio-polyurethane (PU) seats made from environmentally friendly materials.

When Will the Kia PV5 WAV Be Available in the UK?

The Kia PV5 is expected to launch in Korea and Europe in the second half of 2025, with UK availability details to follow. However, early indications suggest it will play a key role in the UK’s new WAV market.

A Game-Changer for Wheelchair Users

The Kia PV5 is set to revolutionise the new WAV sector by offering a practical, efficient, and comfortable mobility solution. With its side-entry accessibility, modular design, and cutting-edge EV technology, it is expected to become a highly sought-after vehicle for wheelchair users in the UK. Without having to be converted after manufacture it will be one of the first ‘off-the-shelf’ WAV available and we look forward to them trickling down to the used market.

Register your interest in the PV5 here – it is expected to be available from WavsGB during May/June 2026. Once you register your interest we’ll let you know when its available.

Electric WAVs have seen a great deal of interest over the last 12 months and this vehicle is likely to generate a great deal of interest when launched.
