Wheelchair car hire over the summer holidays

The summer holidays are here! Hopefully we’ll have some good weather, but this being the UK you can never really rely on it.

Whether you have a main summer holiday abroad, a ‘staycation’ or are just planning a few day trips with the family to attraction near and far you may need a bit of extra support if you have a family member in a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Perhaps over the summer holidays you are planning a visit to friends or family who may be wheelchair users and you’d like to take them somewhere for a daytrip or maybe even a few days away. Transport may be an issue for you if you don’t currently have a means to transport the wheelchair passenger.

At WavsGB – you can hire a vehicle which has been adapted to carry a passenger seated in the wheelchair.

How does a wheelchair car work?

A wheelchair car – or a car which has been adapted to carry a wheelchair passenger is really just a standard vehicle which has had some modifications to allow it to easily transport a wheelchair passenger.

The modifications/adaptions include re-configuring the rear and boot space of the vehicle to fit the wheelchair and adding a drop down ramp allowing the wheelchair to easily board.

Once on board, wheelchairs are secured with a four point restraint system which holds the wheelchair securely in place – the wheelchair passenger – still seated in the wheelchair – is secured in place via a dedicated seat belt.

The wheelchair is usually located next to or behind the rear seats. In some cases you can have the wheelchair passenger in the front passenger position – ask us for details.

Driving the wheelchair vehicle is literally the same as driving an ordinary car or van.

How do I hire a wheelchair accessible vehicle?

If you’ve decided you need a wheelchair vehicle and would like to hire one then we have a range of vehicles available to suit your needs.

1. Decide what type of vehicle you need..
   You can choose between a rear wheelchair passenger or up-front passenger
2. How many passengers will you need to transport

There are WAV’s to suit most requirements, some smaller vehicles have 2 or 3 seats, the ‘family-sized’ WAV’s have 3,4 or 5 seats and the largest vehicles have 6 or 7 seats^*

3. How long will you need the vehicle?
   At WavsGB you decide how long you need the vehicle… there is no maximum or minimum time frame. Hire the vehicle from as little as a day for as long as you need. A week, a month.. or even the entire summer holiday if you require.

Where can I hire my WAV?

Our office is based in Marksbury, just between Bath and Bristol.
Vehicles can be collected from our office here (we have secure parking – where you can leave your normal day-to-day vehicle if required) or if you live further afield we can arrange to deliver the vehicle to you and collect when you have finished – all for a small fee.
