What is a Tramper?
In terms of wheelchairs and mobility equipment, a Tramper is a scooter or wheelchair which is battery powered and designed for all-terrain travel. Typically a Tramper will have larger wheels and a lower centre of gravity allowing it to traverse terrain that you would not normally attempt in a standard wheelchair or mobility scooter.
Think of them as a cross between a mobility scooter and an ATV.
Trampers are ideals for travelling across rougher ground and large grass areas (fields etc..) Their design makes them ideal for outdoor adventures with the user able to travel up and down slopes, over bumps and uneven ground, through shallow water (e.g. puddles), and even through mud and wet/soft ground …ideal for the UK climate!
Wheelchair vehicles suitable for Trampers
There are no wheelchair accessible vehicles build specifically to transport Trampers, however a number of standard wheelchair accessible vehicles will have room to be able to fit.
Some WAV vehicles have a large rear area and can easily fit a standard mobility scooter, some even have enough room to be able to fit a Tramper too.
It’s worth pointing out here, that when you are using a mobility scooter or Tramper, that unlike a wheelchair you cannot be seated in the scooter/Tramper while onboard the WAV. The scooter must be loaded and secured in place without a passenger on board.
