Finding wheelchair adapted vehicles to buy
Life can change suddenly and if you find yourself in need of way to transport a wheelchair passenger – it can be a confusing time and hard to know where to start and what to look for.
First things first, in terms of vehicles there are plenty of options for wheelchair users.
There are options for different types of vehicles, options for how to pay and options for every budget.
Depending on your individual circumstances you may need to have a wheelchair accessible vehicle as your second car, or it may need to replace your existing vehicle. Only you can decide that, so it’s important to think about how you’re planning to use the vehicle – how often will the wheelchair passenger be in the vehicle? Also important, is to consider what your budget is.
For example, if you have a larger budget and the wheelchair passenger will only need to be in the vehicle occasionally. It might be worth considering a smaller second vehicle which will be used only for the wheelchair user when needed. Alternatively if you have a tighter budget you might want to look at a replacement for your existing car. In these circumstances you’ll be able (in most cases) to part-exchnage your car for a wheelchair accessible car – you might want to look for one with flexible seating which can be used as a regular car when teh ehweelchair user is on board.
There are lots of options, and you should be able to find one that fits your needs.
New or used wheelchair accessible vehicle
Depending on if you are looking for a new or used WAV vehicle will affect where you look.
If you are looking for a brand new WAV…
Manufacturers don’t make wheelchair vehicles directly – they build a normal WAV and it is then converted to wheelchair accessible vehicle by a dedicated company. Popular wheelchair accessible conversion compannies include Allied Mobility, GM Coachwork and Gowrings – you can buy brand new wheelchair accessible vehicles from them.
If you have decided to buy a used WAV…
Used wheelchair vehicles represent excellent value for money. Generally they are not used as much as a standard car or van so typically are in much better condition and with lower mileage than the equivalent car.
At WavsGB we only have used wheelchair accesible vehicles for sale.
Our range of vehicles covers all budgets starting from under £5000.
Buying from a used WAV dealer offers a great deal of choice. Not only do you get a choice of different conversions, but also a whole range of makes and models to try and see which one is the best fit for your needs.
If you are looking to buy a wheelchair accessible vehicle you can browse our vehicles here, if you have questions you can send us an email or a live-chat.
Used WAVs for saleWhere to buy a wheelchair car?
Once you’ve decided what type of WAV vehicle will fit your needs you’ll need to find one.
As a more specialist type of vehicle, there are obviously not as many WAV dealers around as there are normal car dealerships. However that can be a good thing – it means that most of the dealers are very specialist in what they do and can offer good advice and point you in the right direction.
The downside of fewer dealers is that it makes it more likely you’ll have to travel to view vehicles you are interested in… but there are even alternatives to that.
Here at WavsGB we realise that many of our customers cannot make the journey to our showroom in Somerset. That’s why we offer the following:
Fully featured website – our wheelchair cars for sale are all listed on our website. Including a description, plenty of photos, important details like mileage and age, a floorplan which shows you clealy where the wheelchair is located and measurements to make sure there is enough room for your particular wheelchair.
Home Demonstrations – If you find a vehicle you are interested in, but are unable to get to us. We can arrange to bring the vehicle to you. One of our wheelchair accessible vehicle experts will drive the vehicle to you, give you a full overview and demonstration and allow you to take it for a test drive.
Before we bring the vehicle to you we have it serviced and MOT’d – so that if it you decide to buy we can leave it with you! More information about our home demonstration service is here
Video Tour – In some cases where a home demonstration is not possible or appropriate we can offer a video tour of a wheelchair car you may be intersted in. We’ll arrange a time and can contact you via most video-calling services. We’ll give you an overall tour of the vehicle, so you specific areas close up and you can ask questions, be shown how things work and ask to see certain areas.
Nationwide delivery – If you decide to buy the car we can deliver to you anywhere nationwide.
Should you live a bit farther afield (We once had a customer in Australia!) we’ll work with you to get the vehicle to you as quickly as possible.
