Can any wheelchair be used in a WAV?

When deciding whether a wheelchair is suitable for use in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle – WAV – the most important consideration is whether it has been crash tested. If a wheelchair is going to be used as a seat while travelling, it is strongly recommended that it meets ISO 7176-19 standards.

Wheelchairs that comply with ISO 7176-19 have been crash tested specifically for use in motor vehicles. Most compliant models display an anchor point symbol, often resembling a hook. They will also have clearly marked securement points at the front and rear of the frame, designed for use with a winch and a four point tie down restraint system.

Although ISO 7176-19 compliance is not a legal requirement for using a wheelchair in a WAV, it is considered best practice. The four point restraint systems fitted in accessible vehicles are crash tested to secure wheelchairs that meet this standard. If a wheelchair does not have recognised anchor points or has not been tested to ISO 7176-19, the restraint system cannot guarantee the same level of safety in the event of a collision.

For peace of mind and maximum safety, choosing a crash tested, compliant wheelchair is always the recommended option when travelling in a WAV.
