My WAV battery keeps going flat

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles are often used differently to standard cars. The engine is frequently switched off while equipment is still in use – deploying a ramp, securing restraints, adjusting seating or waiting for a passenger. During this time, the alternator is not charging the battery, so repeated short drains can gradually weaken it.

What can you do?

There are a few simple steps to help prevent a flat battery:

• Switch off electric restraint reels when the vehicle is not running. This is one of the most common causes of battery drain.

• If your WAV has a powered ramp or tailgate with a physical switch, make sure it is turned off when not in use.

• Try to include occasional longer journeys. WAVs are often used for short trips, which may not give the battery enough time to fully recharge.

A little extra awareness can make a big difference and help keep your vehicle reliable when you need it most.
